The shop was started in 2005 to provide an additional source of funding for our nursing service, as well as giving the Charity an accessible presence in the high street . It was revamped in 2010 and is now achieving both these aims.

The shop sells good quality items at very reasonable prices, and is dependent on the generosity of all our donors. The shop is now gaining a reputation as an opportunity shop where designer and high street fashions are available at bargain prices. The quality of the bric-a-brac  surprises even the most seasoned shoppers. Our spacious and well organised book department  has a large selection of good quality and reasonably priced books. It has become well known and attracts many regular customers.

We also sell pictures, greeting cards and seasonal items, e.g. plants in spring and summer and Christmas cards. We are now the only retail outlet  in Penrith for the good quality bird seed from The Birds’ Bistro, in Penruddock.

We welcome donations, of clothes, shoes, linen and home decor, as well as bric-a-brac, jewellery, fashion accessories, CDs and DVDs  and books. Anything that is unusual,  or that we think is of high value, is assessed by an expert in the field.

We aim to recycle any items that cannot be sold, and the money from this makes a significant  contribution to the shop’s income. If you have textiles that you do not feel are of sufficient quality to sell in the shop, then label the bag RAGS or  RECYCLING and we will not even open it! We can recycle textiles, shoes, belts and bags in any condition. Over 50% of unwanted clothes goes into landfill each year, so by giving them to us, we not only reduce that figure enormously, but also raise money for the Hospice at Home service We neither advertise, nor do we drop bags into houses, as this has not  been found to be cost effective for us.  In addition, we also recycle broken and unwanted jewellery.

We are unable to accept furniture, cots, high chairs, prams, pushchairs, safety helmets, duvets, pillows, videos or cassettes, or ex car boot sale items. If you have a question about donating goods to the shop please contact the shop on 01768 868602 or hospiceshop@btconnect.com. Parking is allowed outside the shop for loading and unloading purposes, and our staff will always help carry goods into the shop.

Please remember our Hospice at Home shop when you are clearing out, or equally important, come and visit us...or do what they say in other continents: “come and do a bit of opportunity shopping”.
