Big Birthday Bike Ride
Join us for our Big Birthday Bike Ride!
What is the Big Birthday Bike Ride?
The Big Birthday Bike Ride is a sponsored cycle event taking place within our Clinical Service Area, organised by Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland, a local Charity that provides
care and support to patients in their own homes at the end stages of life. The event is open to all adults, and offers two lengths of cycle ride approx. 30 miles or 62 miles.
Both distances require stamina, energy and training to fully enjoy the day. Both rides start at Dalston Recreation Centre and follow various National Cycle Network routes to Keswick via
Raughton Head, Hesket Newmarket, Branthwaite and Bassenthwaite. The 30 mile event will finish here, and the 62 mile route will take participants back to Dalston via Threlkeld, Mungrisdale,
Greystoke, Skelton and Raughton Head. All bike types are welcomed – hybrids and road bikes, electric and tandems!
What will happen on the day?
The day will begin at 9am, with registration at Dalston Recreation Centre. A “Grab and Go” breakfast station will be provided to give you an energising boost to start the day. A Grab and Go snack station will be situated at a midway point in the morning and lunch will be provided in Keswick, where the 30 mile route ends. Participants on the longer route will continue back towards Dalston, with a further Grab and Go Station to enjoy, and a well-earned celebration drink will be waiting for you at the finish line. All refreshments will be served following Covid-19 guidance.
How much is it to enter?
The Registration Fee is £30. This includes:
- A Grab and Go breakfast station, snacks on route, lunch and a well earned celebratory drink at the finish line.
- A free cycling top to wear on the day.
- Marshalled check points throughout the route.
- Cycling support on route.
How much do I need to raise?
As a local Charity, you can be certain that all proceeds raised from the event go directly towards vital hospice care and support within your local community. Each participant is asked to aim to raise £150 in sponsorship. Fundraising guides are provided to help you reach your fundraising goal.
Anything else I need to know?
- Participants are expected to make their own travel arrangements to Dalston and home
from the finish line at Keswick or Dalston. Transport is not provided.
- Participants must be of reasonable fitness to complete the cycle ride and be willing to train
and fundraise for Hospice at Home.
- Participants are advised to prepare and train for their chosen route. It is suggested that

September will be a lovely summer’s day but you never know with the Cumbrian weather and
it’s better to be prepared!
By joining us on this special day, you will be helping to raise an estimated £15,000 for Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland, which provides a free service for patients in the North and East of Cumbria who have a life-limiting or life threatening illness and wish to be cared for at home with all that is loved and familiar around them. Support is also provided to the patient’s family and loved ones.
