Befriending Service

Our Befriending Service is here to support people with serious illnesses and their carers.

Befriending Services

It’s aim is to:

  • reduce loneliness
  • build confidence
  • support emotional, social and mental well-being

It complements our clinical services and is run by trained volunteers who are managed by our Nursing Service.

The Service is for:

  • Adults (aged 18+) with life-limiting illnesses
  • Family members or carers (aged 18+) who support someone with a life-limiting illness

Befrienders visit people at home (or in the community) and can help with a variety of tasks. The length of support depends on individual needs and can range from a few weeks to longer periods.

Befrienders can:

  • Provide companionship and spend time with patients
  • Prepare light meals or drinks during visits
  • Help with shopping or run small errands
  • Accompany someone to an appointment
  • Support people so they can attend social or leisure activities
  • Walk dogs
  • Stay with patients so carers can take a break
