Apprenticeships That Add Up: How McVitie’s Levy Support is Shaping Futures at Hospice at Home
At Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland, we believe in the power of people — and the amazing things they can achieve with the right support. One shining example is our very own Kelsey, whose inspiring journey from admin assistant to finance professional is not only a testament to her determination but also to the incredible impact of partnership and generosity.
Thanks to the unwavering support of McVitie’s (Pladis) and Carlisle College, Kelsey was given the opportunity to pursue her passion for numbers through a Level 3 Accounting Assistant Apprenticeship. What made it all possible? McVitie’s generous donation of their unused Apprenticeship Levy — a gift that has created lasting impact not just for Kelsey, but for our charity and community too.
Kelsey’s natural aptitude for finance quickly shone through in her role at Hospice at Home. With encouragement from her team, and expert tuition from Carlisle College, she embarked on a career-changing apprenticeship — all while continuing to work full-time, support our mission of delivering compassionate end-of-life care, and, incredibly, completing a sponsored skydive to raise funds for us!
“Completing my apprenticeship at Carlisle College has been both a rewarding and transformative experience,” said Kelsey.
“I’m incredibly grateful to McVitie’s for their generous support through the Apprenticeship Levy transfer, which made this opportunity possible. The combination of practical training at Hospice at Home and expert guidance from Carlisle College has equipped me with the skills and confidence to take the next step in my career.”
We are immensely proud of Kelsey and everything she has achieved — her commitment, compassion, and courage exemplify everything we stand for at Hospice at Home. Her success is a clear reminder that adult education is for everyone, and that meaningful, fulfilling careers can flourish in the charity sector.
“Some reports show that as little as 4% of employers are currently utilising their full Apprenticeship Levy Fund,” said Ashley Nicholson, Training Co-ordinator for Professional Services at Carlisle College.
“That’s why partnerships like this are so important. We’re proud to support Hospice at Home — an organisation so deeply rooted in the local community — and to help develop local talent like Kelsey.”
“This collaboration is a powerful example of how large employers like McVitie’s can make a real difference by redirecting unused levy funds to support smaller charities. Their generosity has unlocked professional development for Kelsey, helped strengthen our team, and enabled better care for the people who need us most.” Debbie Mckenna, Chief Executive Officer, Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland.
From all of us at Hospice at Home, a heartfelt thank you to McVitie’s and Carlisle College. And to Kelsey — we couldn’t be prouder of the journey you’re on. You inspire us all.
