Debbie’s Story
My Volunteering Journey – Debbie Shearer, Trustee Director
Introduction
My name is Debbie Shearer, and I proudly serve as a Trustee Director for Hospice at Home. My journey with this incredible organization began in 2019, when I started as a supermarket bag packer and raffle ticket seller. Then, in 2022, I responded to an advert for Trustees with Risk Management experience, which perfectly aligned with my professional expertise. It felt like a natural step to take in supporting a cause that means so much to me.
Why I Chose to Volunteer
My connection to Hospice at Home is deeply personal. My father-in-law received end-of-life care, and my mother-in-law benefited from Lymphoedema care. Seeing firsthand the incredible impact of these services made me want to give back. I knew that by volunteering, I could help ensure other families receive the same compassionate care that my loved ones did.
What I Enjoy Most
One of the greatest joys of volunteering is the people—the dedicated team I get to work alongside and the amazing individuals we support. Every day, I am reminded that we are making a tangible difference in people’s lives. Knowing that our efforts help individuals and families during some of their most challenging moments is what keeps me motivated.
Personal Growth and Benefits
Beyond the fulfillment of helping others, volunteering has also been professionally rewarding. Serving on the Board has strengthened my leadership skills, and I’ve been able to apply many of these insights to my paid work. It’s been an incredible learning experience that continues to shape me both personally and professionally.
Memorable Experiences
In addition to my trustee duties, I have had the opportunity to take on other volunteer roles, including selling sunflowers at Kendal Calling. Those festival days are long and exhausting—with thousands of steps walked—but they are also incredibly rewarding. Meeting enthusiastic supporters, listening to their heartfelt stories, and experiencing the overwhelming appreciation for Hospice at Home is something truly special.
Many people stop by to share how much Hospice at Home has meant to them. They tell me about the care their loved ones received and how it made a difficult time easier. Their gratitude fuels my commitment and reminds me why our work is so vital. And as an added bonus, after a long day’s volunteering, I get to enjoy the headline acts—a perfect way to wrap up a meaningful day!
Why You Should Volunteer
Without hesitation, I wholeheartedly recommend volunteering with Hospice at Home. The services we provide are free to all recipients, and it’s incredibly rewarding to play even a small part in ensuring they continue. There are so many different volunteer roles that suit a range of skills and availability—whether it’s a one-off event, raffle ticket selling, or a regular commitment, there is something for everyone.
Thinking About Volunteering?
If you’re considering it, what’s stopping you? Whether you have just a few hours to spare or want to take on a more formal role, I promise there is a place for you. You’ll be working alongside like-minded people who are passionate about making a difference, ensuring that end-of-life care can continue to be provided to people in their own homes.
Final Thoughts
Being a volunteer has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It’s a chance to give back, to support a vital service, and to be part of a compassionate community that genuinely cares. If you’re thinking about volunteering—just do it! You won’t regret it.
