Freya’s story
Finding Confidence and Purpose: Freya’s Journey as an Apprentice at Hospice at Home
When I first started my apprenticeship at Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland in May this year (2025), I felt nervous about changing career and learning lots of completely new skills in business administration. I wasn’t sure what to expect, and stepping into a new environment always brings a mix of excitement and apprehension. But from my very first day, everyone was so kind and welcoming, which helped me settle in quickly and feel part of the team.
Since then, my confidence has grown so much. Every week brings new experiences — whether it’s greeting visitors at reception, making and taking calls, helping with donations, or supporting my colleagues across different departments. No two days are the same, and I’ve learnt how every small task contributes to something much bigger: ensuring local patients and families receive the expert care and compassion they deserve.
Working here has shown me the true meaning of teamwork and community. Everyone plays their part, from nurses and fundraisers to volunteers and administrators, all dedicated to helping people live and die with dignity in the place they love most — their own home. It’s inspiring to see how much care and attention goes into everything the charity does, and I feel proud to play even a small part in that.
At work, it genuinely feels like I’m part of a big family, all working towards the same goal. Knowing that what I do helps make a difference to someone’s life, even in a small way, gives me a real sense of purpose. Hospice at Home isn’t just a workplace — it’s a community built on kindness, compassion, and respect.
I’m so proud to be part of it.
