John’s Story
My Volunteering Journey – In Memory of Linda
Giving Back in Tribute
My name is John Lowrey, and for the past two and a half years, I’ve been volunteering at the Dalston HQ, fundraising by ‘shaking buckets’ and selling raffle tickets. I also do my best to keep the Courtyard Garden tidy—though I wouldn’t call myself much of a gardener!
I began volunteering after losing my wife, Linda, to cancer three years ago. In her final weeks, she received fabulous care in our home—something she had always feared wouldn’t be available to her. Her greatest wish was to die peacefully at home, and thanks to the hospice at home team, that wish was granted. The care arrived exactly when it was needed, and in her memory, I feel it’s my duty to help repay that service and ensure it remains available for others.
The Rewards of Volunteering
One of the things I enjoy most about volunteering is meeting people—whether through fundraising or spending time with fellow volunteers. It’s been incredibly rewarding to know that, in some small way, my efforts help others access the same care that meant so much to Linda.
I’ve even had a few unexpected adventures along the way! I signed up for a sponsored walk to see the sunset on Blencathra, but Storm Betty had other plans and forced the event’s cancellation. Determined not to miss out, I made two separate trips to the summit—one to see the sunset a few days later, and another because I was set on tackling the Doddick Fell route, a trail I had never done before. That’s one more item ticked off my bucket list!
Why I Recommend Volunteering
I would absolutely encourage anyone to give volunteering a try. It’s a fantastic way to meet new people and connect with the community. There are so many kind and joyful people out there, and it’s a privilege to be part of something that makes a real difference.
If you’re thinking about volunteering but aren’t sure, I’d say just come and join us—you won’t know how much you’ll enjoy it until you try!
A Little Help Needed…
I may not be an expert gardener (that was Linda’s passion—I just did as I was told in the flower beds), but I do enjoy my vegetable patch. If anyone is willing to help out or offer some advice on keeping the Courtyard Garden looking its best, I’d love to hear from you!
Volunteering has been my way of honoring Linda’s memory, and I’m grateful for every moment I get to help others receive the care that meant so much to her.
