Robyn’s Journey
From Volunteer Student to Staff Member: My Journey into Bereavement Counselling
My name is Robyn and I currently work as a Counsellor within the Bereavement and Family Support Team at Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland (HHCNL). My path to this role has been both challenging and deeply rewarding, and I’d like to share my journey with you.
Embracing a New Chapter
In 2022, I enrolled in the MA Counselling and Psychotherapy programme at the University of Cumbria. As a mature student, this decision marked a significant shift in my life and career. The course, grounded in person-centred therapy, required me to complete 100 hours of supervised clinical practice—a pivotal part in my professional development.
Finding the Right Fit
Determined to find a placement that resonated with my interests and values, I discovered that HHCNL was an approved supervised practice setting. Their commitment to providing compassionate support to individuals facing life-limiting illnesses and bereavement aligned with my aspirations. After researching their services and ethos, I reached out to Alison, Family Support and Bereavement Team Lead. Following my interview, I was convinced that HHCNL was the ideal environment for my placement.
Growing Through Experience
I commenced my volunteer role as a student counsellor in February 2024. Over the next six months, I engaged with clients navigating the complexities of grief, gaining invaluable insights and developing my counselling skills. Upon qualifying, I successfully applied to continue as a volunteer counsellor. The guidance and expertise provided by Alison, Barbara, and the entire Bereavement and Family Support Team have been and continue to be instrumental to my development. In February 2025, I was honoured to join HHCNL as a staff member, working eight hours a week. This role allows me to continue contributing to a service that is both highly valued by the community and integral to providing holistic care across Carlisle and the North Lakes.
Reflecting on the Journey
Transitioning from a student to a professional counsellor has been a journey of growth, lots of learning and personal fulfilment. The experiences and relationships I’ve gained at HHCNL have not only enriched my professional capabilities but have also reinforced my commitment to supporting individuals through their most challenging times.
To everyone at Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland, thank you for your unwavering support and for welcoming me into a community dedicated to making a meaningful difference.
